As a therapist, I feel a responsibility to provide my clients with the massage they request. I also feel a responsibility to provide them with the massage I believe will move them to a state of wellness. Sometimes these two responsibilities collide.
The majority of my clients request deep tissue massage and do so with the expectation of receiving a deep pressure massage. After all, no pain, no gain, right? Not necessarily so. Clients tell me they will gladly take a painful massage if it means all of their pains will be gone or reduced in a day or two. This isn’t what deep tissue massage is all about, though.
Deep tissue massage is a technique therapists use that is intended to release the trigger points or knots that inhabit the deeper layers of muscle tissue. However, proper massage technique requires the therapist to start with light pressure, adding pressure that is only sufficient to cause the trigger point to release. No more.
I like to explain the difference between deep tissue massage and deep pressure massage as the difference between being invited into the room and simply barging uninvited into the room. I’m proud to say that Houston Medical Massage clients get the relief they seek without feeling like they lost a fight with a martial arts champion.
A clean relaxing environment and proper technique with strong hands are what Houston Medical Massage clients get when they come for deep tissue massage.
